Appreciating Spring with Mary Oliver led by Jean McWilliams and Lisa Kleiman

May 22, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Meet at Northwestern Avenue (Forbidden Drive and Northwestern Avenue)

Mary Oliver was described by fellow poet, Maxine Kumin, as “an indefatigable guide to the natural world, particularly to its lesser known aspects.” Oliver’s poetry invites us to pay attention to the quiet occurrences of birds, trees, and wild animals as found in the hidden places of pond, meadow, and woodlands. Come with us as we meander the trails of the Wissahickon, stopping every so often to contemplate its everyday beauty as we read a poem from Oliver’s prodigious collection of verse. We will meet at Northwestern Avenue for a hike of about three miles through Andorra and Harper’s Meadows and then onto the Orange Trail as it parallels the Creek. Moderate hike with some rocks, roots, and inclines.

Difficulty Level: Moderate (some inclines and declines, uneven surfaces)

Distance: 3 Miles

Registration is required for all hikes so that participants can be informed of weather or other emergency cancellations. We ask all event attendees to bring a mask and mask up if a distance of six feet cannot be maintained during the activity. If you or anyone in your household are exhibiting COVID-19 systems, please stay home. More information is at fow.org/covid-19.

Unless otherwise specified, Trail Ambassador Walks may be on rocky, rugged trails that may be wet and slippery. Wear sturdy shoes or boots with socks. Walks are cancelled in heavy rain. Service animals are always welcome. For more information contact Claire Brennan at brennan@fow.org. Visit www.fow.org for updates.
